Mark Knopfler

Mark Knopfler built one of the most recognizable guitar tones in rock without using a pick. His fingerstyle approach on a Fender Stratocaster — run clean into a Music Man HD-130 and later Mesa Boogie amplifiers — produced the chiming, articulate sound of Dire Straits' best records. His red 1961 Stratocaster, used on Sultans of Swing, became so iconic that Fender produced a signature model. Knopfler has continued to refine his approach across a solo career spanning decades, working with National resonator guitars, Martin acoustics, and vintage Gibsons alongside his Strats. His tone requires almost no effects — the sound is almost entirely the interaction of fingers, strings, and amplifier.
