Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street (1978) contains one of the most recognizable saxophone riffs in pop history, played by Raphael Ravenscroft on a single take. City to City spent 22 weeks at number one in the UK. Rafferty's songwriting had a melancholy specificity that separated him from the sunnier end of smooth rock.
